The capercaillie (the western capercaillie, tetrao urogallus, the wood grouse) is the largest member of european grouse family. The head of a male is black coloured, as well as somewhat longer feathers under the beak, so called “chin”. Above eyes, there is clearly visible “rose” that is, bulge, which is made of red coloured skin fringes. This “rose” is especially visible during mating season.

It mainly populates old stands, with rich undergrowth and high amount of bushy flora, but can also be found in old coniferous or deciduous stands that are mostly inaccessible, undisturbed and placed above 1000 meters above sea level, covered with preserved mixed stands of white and black pine trees, beeches, firs and spruces.
